It is important to understand the specifications and characteristics of fiber braided hoses so you can choose the right hose for your needs. The hose must not only be wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant, but also be able to withstand different temperatures and working pressures.

Hoses that use fabric or wire braid are more flexible than spiral hoses. This is because the wires/textile fibers in this layer are parallel to each other and do not cross each other.

How to extend the service life of fiber braided hoses
It is important to choose the right hose for your hydraulic system to extend its life. Thermoplastic hoses can easily handle the high temperatures and environmental stresses that can damage rubber products and lead to premature hose failure, safety risks and costly downtime. These hoses also offer many additional advantages over rubber hoses, including greater abrasion resistance, consistent long lengths and fewer leak points.

The reinforcement layer gives the hydraulic hose its muscles and determines its operating pressure. It can be made of fiber, stainless steel or other materials. The type of reinforcement material directly affects the end-use performance of the hose.

There are two common styles of hydraulic hose reinforcement: braided and spiral wound. Braided hose consists of multiple layers of wire or textile fibers twisted together. Metal wires or textile fibers in one layer are arranged at specific angles, creating a stronger hose that can withstand specific operating pressures. Braided hose is also more flexible than spiral wound hose, with a smaller minimum bend radius.

Spiral wound hose is constructed from a series of monofilament spiral coils that add strength and prevent the hose from collapsing under vacuum pressure. Spiral-wound plies have a lower pressure rating than braided hose and have better resistance to shock loads than regular braided hose because the individual helices do not overlap and begin to wear by rubbing against each other.

Reasons for the breakage of the steel wire layer in the fiber braided hose
When fluid systems experience sudden pressure spikes, hoses are more likely to rupture at bends. This can cause hazardous fluids to eject rapidly, injuring equipment and personnel. Choosing the right hose for the application is critical to preventing this. Braided hose is ideal for low to medium strength, low pressure applications, while spiral hose is best suited for high pressures and frequent pressure surges.

Wire reinforcement gives the hose great tensile strength, but not great bending or compression strength. It is also highly susceptible to corrosion. To solve this problem, the inner tube of the hose is coated with anti-corrosion material. Coatings can significantly extend the life of your hose.

Optical microscopy of the ruptured hose revealed chemical degradation of the first and second reinforcement layers to ammonium salts of terephthalic acid (ammonolysis). The optical fractography also showed that the rupture started on the inner surface of the inner tube. It then spreads to the outer surface and lengthwise along the hose. There are no foreign particles or unusual features at the fracture surface, which is confirmed by the fracture characteristics. A higher magnification view of the fracture surface is shown. 4a-d. The fracture surface closest to the rupture origin contains fog cracks and branch cracks entering the inner tube.

The main raw materials used in fiber braided hoses
Raw material selection is critical to the performance of any hose. A hose’s reinforcements are its “muscles.” Braided wire comes in different wire thicknesses and pitch angles, which affects flexibility, strength (pressure rating), and temperature performance. The right braid combined with the correct core and outer material ensures that the hose will perform to the highest standards in critical fluid systems.

The cost and quality of hose can also be affected by the raw materials used. For example, stainless steel braid typically costs more than nylon or polyester. They will last longer and provide better value over time. The key is to find a supplier who is willing to work with you on your hose design.

The right raw materials can help ensure that your industrial rubber hose is manufactured to your specifications and ready for immediate application. This prevents costly production delays and helps you get the most out of your hose. For example, higher quality reinforcement can allow your hose to be used in high-pressure applications where minimum bend radius is a major issue. Hoses with stainless steel reinforcements have a smaller minimum bend radius than spiral hoses with the same pressure rating.
